It is my pleasure to announce that The Tank is looking for 10 individuals to join our novel introductory training program. This innovative 4-week program has been designed to be educational, effective, safe and targeted to people with limited training experience. Yes you read that correctly. I will say it again, we are looking for beginners.

With 7 years experience in training people, we have hammered out what works and are exceptional at teaching beginners the ins and outs of what it takes to drop weight and get in shape. We know our system works and the proof lies in the grocery list of college athletes, grandmothers, kids, teens, coaches, dads and gym owners who began their training under our guidance as absolute beginners and have met and surpassed their initial individual health and fitness goals.

Our inaugural Tank Lite class is wrapping up their program on Wednesday of this week. These athletes are now prepared both physically and mentally to continue their commitment to health and wellness as they graduate into regular classes at The Tank on Thursday. They have gained strength, mobility and endurance. But more importantly they have done so in a safe manner and have learned what it takes mentally to achieve health and well being.

Building off the success of our first Tank Lite program we are now offering this program again to 10 more individuals in June.

We really like helping people at the beginning of their health and fitness journey. There are no quick fixes. There are no magic pills. It takes commitment and hard work. We know its scary. We know you feel vulnerable. To a person, everyone at The Tank has been right were you are. We all started and have worked our way thru that initial fear and vulnerability. We are now on the other side and we invite you to join us here. Use our knowledge and experience. The path has been well trodden. Do you see that light off in the distance. Thats us. Follow the light and all will be well.

TanklitehalfwayblogphotoTank Lite Update =)

I have reached the half way point of The Tank’s novel introductory program. After seven training sessions, my newbies have impressed me with their hard work and desire to learn what it takes to start down the path to increased health and wellbeing.

Holding true to a major focus on eduction, every class has begun with a 15 min lecture. Lecture topics have been wide ranging, but have all been anchored in teaching the evolutionary principles of preventive medicine – Movement, Eating and Sleep.

The training focus has been on mobility, injury prevention, strength and conditioning. I have been concentrating on teaching them how to train their bodies in a safe and sustainable manner. Quality of movement has been emphasized and screening procedures have been utilized and taught to ensure fundamental movements of training are safe and effective. Teaching has focused on what I feel are the fundamental movements of an effective general physical preparedness strength and conditioning program – spinal bracing, hip hinging, squatting, pushing and pulling.

It has been a privilege to have ten keen newbies gracing us with their presence at the din din. It has been enjoyable for myself and the other fishes at The Tank to have such a refreshing group of people join our ranks. I want to thank them again and thank the din din’s for their patience with allowing this program to happen during their time slot.

This program has been so enjoyable and effective that I believe I will be running this program again in June. I will let you know.

If you read this and have an interest in this program in June please do not hesitate to email me at drjameslaithwaite@mac.com

Tank Tales – Bonnie Fish

FullSizeRender 5She entered The Tank more broken than anyone I have had the privilege of helping. She came to me because her daughter believed I could help her. Her daughter came to train, because her friend had confidence that I could help her. Referrals from referrals is how I like to roll. I do my best to help those that believe in what I do. If they trust me, they show up. When they show up, I do my best to find the problem and then together we fix the problem.

It has been an honour to help Heather Bell – aka Bonnie Fish. Her transformation has been incredible and inspirational. Below are her words. She sent them via a text message a few weeks ago. I have kept the editing to a minimum to preserve the honesty and emotion of her story. I have read her words a hundred times and each time I am overwhelmed. Her courage and work ethic are beacons for those seeking inspiration on how to overcome life’s cruel hardships. The bottom line is that Movement is Medicine.

How life was before Fossil Fitness
The Fire = pain in too many places to mention.
Getting out of bed I could not even roll onto my side.
The stairs.
The bathroom.
The shower.
Getting in and out to even get to sitting position in the bath.
Washing my hair to even put my arms up slightly.
Dressing was very difficult; I needed Gord (her Husband) to help me put my bra on. Doing up buttons was brutal.
I couldn’t squeeze my own lemon or do dishes or open a juice etc.
I needed help with all chopping and to carry my coffee cup to the living room.
I even had a hard time extending the recliner.
I was not driving much at all because I didn’t trust my neck mobility and to turn the ignition took two hands.
I picked my grandchildren up with my forearms and never even considered floor play.
I could not get them in and out of their car seats.
It was very hard to get up and down off the floor or even at the beach.
I became a bystander in my own life, I sat and watched while my family played on the rocks at the river or went to the beach.
Even snow was to hard to navigate and I was extremely cautious of falling and being injured on top of it all.
Cooking and shopping always required help from my family.
I had to wear slip on footwear because of the inflammation in my toes.
I tried a lot of therapies, clean eating, supplements even some alternative stuff I felt would be helpful.
I was prescribed an immune depressant drug called Methotrexate.
I was given a dose of cortisone that was supposed to help relieve symptoms and pain.
After the worst week yet post cortisone, I regrouped and knew I needed to find a different approach.

Enter James, The Tank and his Fossils
I stumbled around for a couple weeks getting my bearings and by the 3rd week in I was seeing daily improvements.
Dressing was becoming easier, washing my hair was a easy thing again.
I was doing the dishes and carrying my coffee and getting my own groceries. Pots and pans and knives were back in my hands. Every passing month gave me back freedom and control.
I wish I had documented monthly all the changes that occurred. The increase in strength, the improvement in my balance and improved mental clarity I have gained to challenge myself every day.
I no longer take anything for pain and have learned that the tender spots are just there and I can deal with them without coddling those areas to much and my mind is the only chemical distributor I need to overcome pain.
I wish I had relearned this lesson along time ago because I knew as a child that I could pick myself up and dust myself off after any fall. I am getting stronger all the time and have so much more endurance and flexibility. When I started at The Tank, the thought of doing a plank was almost ridiculous. I had trouble even getting to the ground safely. This week, I am up planking and my hands and my wrists are strong enough to take it. I take pride in running around racing my grand kids and lifting them into my arms without an issue.
I was so happy when my 3 yr old grandson said good job Nan and gave me a high five for being able to get him in and out of his car seat. I have been at this new road to wellness for less then a year. I can’t say how long it will take to overcome the Arthritis aka Autoimmune issue that I currently suffer from or if it will always be lurking. However, I know if I keep up what with the training James teaches us at Fossil Fitness, I will beat all the wars. I thank him weekly for his knowledge and willingness to learn more to teach more. He is my hero/health guru and I am proud to wear my fossil fitness tshirt to spread the news. I am grateful for the extra kinstretch training he brought to The Tank because it helps bring back childhood movement that has been lost for far too long. I really feel that this should be the first course of treatment for any ailment physical or mental. I work out with people that inspire me everyday. New artificial knees or chronic shoulder issues overcome daily, my fellow Fossil Fitness athletes are all rockstars and I am grateful to know them and have them encourage me along the way. I love watching the more challenging groups to give myself a motivation pep talk. I have drank the koolaid and it’s the best thing I have had in years. I can’t wait to see how far we go this year and how much better life will be because of this amazing group.

Tank Lite - Dawn

Tank Light – DAWN

As I recently discussed, we have created a novel strength and conditioning program geared toward absolute beginners. The response has been overwhelming and we SOLD OUT in 24 hours. Since two of our governing premises for this program are training safety and the efficient transfer of knowledge, the class size had to be capped to ensure an effective coach to athlete ratio. So unfortunately, due to our self imposed cap, we have had to turn people away. I have been kicking around a few ideas on how we could circumvent the cap problem and I have decided to avoid the problem all together and instead open up an early morning Tank Light program. So we have great news for those individuals that love the early mornings.  There are now an additional 8 spots available in our Tank Light program. So to be clear – we will have a Tank Light class that will takes place in the evenings and will be called Tank Light DUSK and we will have a Tank Light class that will take place in the mornings and will be called Tank Light DAWN. We are seeking 8 individuals that would like to be apart of the first Tank Light DAWN class.
